The recording of The Kelly Gang Cd has involved some of the greats of the Australian music industry including Dave Gleeson (Screaming Jets) Mark Gable (Choir Boys) Doc Neeson (Angels) Anne Kirkpatrick (Slims daughter) and many others. All these highly talented vocalists and musicians have been guided by one of the best producers/musicians available, Parris Macleod.
Daryl Melbourne first met Parris when they were both involved with a musical production in Asia. Their friendship blossomed as did their respect for each others musical objectives and it was this friendship/relationship that gave Daryl the belief that he had finally found someone he could absolutely trust to produce and deliver a sound that would suit his ‘Kelly’ project.

Daryl says:
“When I was writing tunes for The Kelly Gang lyrics, it was very difficult not to give it an early Australian/country or Irish feel. But I wanted to stay away from this as others had already done it, and done it well, so I needed a different sound. I also felt that within this recording there should be no set rules and so what we have ended up with, is a variety of songs with different styles and sounds but overall they still have a connection, and that connection is the story. We tried to make the music method fit the direction of the song lyrics. Also this is a very character driven recording in which the vocalists had to become the people they were representing. I could not have done this without the wonderful talents of Parris”.

Airplay was another issue Daryl and the studio had to contemplate: “We could have sold out and created ‘radio friendly’ music that would have potentially gained us additional airplay, but this would not have suited what the lyrics and story is about” Daryl says.

The Kelly Gang’s music does have some great variations. Tracks 3-4-5 of Part 1 of the trilogy are a perfect example of this. The 3rd track features some unique/classic guitar sounds while track 4 presents the beautiful and haunting sounds of the Irish flute. Track 5 has a real country feel, and this embodies the song accordingly.

Daryl concludes with:
Recording at Cloud Studios has been like having a home away from home, for both myself and all the musicians involved. Vocals on some tracks are still not 100% completed and both Parris and I would like to add some surprise/special guest artists onto the 2nd and 3rd Cds. We have had some great fun putting this together and we are sure there are more good times to come”.
